Packaging is a blend of art and science

Most of the time, a judgement call is made on a product within the first three seconds. Those three seconds are exceedingly important when you consider that more than 70% of purchasing decisions are made at the shelf. Add to this the fact that supermarkets can contain on average 40,000 packs to choose from. Packaging graphics have more to do than simply look pretty. They must work to cut through the white noise that is the crowded supermarket shelf, and attract a potential buyer. Stonefern can walk you through the 10 step process of great packaging design and ensure that graphics, sustainability, materials, shape and costs are all achieved on budget.





DESIGN

Packaging can be your principal point of graphic market place recognition for your customers. In order to be effective it must adhere to five simple principles: be simple, memorable, timeless, versatile and appropriate. Good packaging design is far from a 5 minute process. Be wary of anyone who will offer you a design for less than a day’s work, it is simply not possible to design effectively within that time frame. Packaging design needs to attract the right kind of audience. You wouldn’t want your soap product attracting chefs, purely because it has a chilli on the front. You would want it to show more soap-related imagery. At Stonefern, we listen to our clients and can work both independently and collaboratively to ascertain and produce a creative and engaging packaging design.

They asked us once again to implement their new brand identity across their existing packaging range as well as some new exciting products and flavours.

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN A PACKAGING ROLL OUT?

Art boards, lots of them! At present the MOMA product range is made up of 72 separate cutter guides and artworks. Each one containing colour, ingredient, brand, nutritional, print and legal information that must be correct to the last minute detail and not because the client, multiple printers, manufacturers or trading standards demand it, but because we will not settle for less than perfection and total consistency across the entire brand.

WHAT'S NEXT?

This is really only the start, but now we have the 'kit of parts' in place that will allow us to build upon the new design standards over the next 12 months and begin the process of brand implementation across MOMA's many and varied designs mediums.!

We have already begun with in-house items such as stationery and industry presentation material, but now the real challenge starts as we move on to replacing all of MOMA's point of sale, advertising (digital and print), clothing, sampling and expo materials but to name a few.... The list goes on and on!

WE ARE NOT AN AGENCY. WE ARE A TEAM

We don’t really believe in big costly studios filled with designer furniture, flat screen TV's and chill out areas staffed by jacks of all trades. We prefer to stay small, cost effective and only work with specialist experts we know.
